About the Library

Library service at the Bracebridge Public Library began in 1908 when the original Carnegie building was constructed. The 2,800 sq. foot Muskoka stone structure was expanded to 8,400 sq. feet in 1984 with an addition that maintained the heritage character of the building while allowing for improved service and collection space. The Library will mark 100 years of service to the community during its centennial in 2008.

In 1998, Bracebridge Public Library opened a Branch Library at the Fenbrook Medium Security Institution. It serves the reading and information needs of the inmates and staff, mirroring community library services and standards.

Strategic Plan

A Committee made up of Board and staff members developed a vision for the Library that will guide its development over the next five years. As a result of this process, the Library has committed itself to its present main street location and to the heritage building that has served the community for almost 100 years. Recognizing the challenges of limited space and serviceability that the current Library building presents, a plan for expansion is the thread that runs through the entire document.  Copies are available in the Library.

Support Your Library

The Library welcomes financial donations and will issue an income tax receipt to the donor.  The Library Quilt is also an excellent way to support the library, in recognition of family or friends, or to honour the memory of a loved one.   For a $50 donation, individuals may purchase a book spine and have it inscribed with the name of an individual or a family. The Quilt hangs in the Robert J. Boyer  Reading Room and serves as a permanent tribute to the value of reading.

Fundraising events take place occasionally and are promoted in the Events Calendar section of the site.

Library Membership

Library membership is free to all permanent residents or property owners in the District of Muskoka. A $50  annual fee ( or $25 for 6 months) may be paid by non-residents who wish to borrow materials, use the internet, or access other library services.

Circulation Policy and Borrowing Rules

Most items are checked out for a three week period.  Videos, DVD’s and material in high demand, are checked out for one week.  Extended loans may be arranged.  Reference material is only used in the Library
